Wow...

I just received an e-mail from a woman who I have never met and holds a unpleasant role in a dark chapter of my life. "Emma wanted you to have this photo from her dance recital. I'm not certain it's welcome, but I promised I'd send it anyway." Emma is my half-sister, whom I have never met, nor have I ever seen until now. She is the product of the affair that my father had before he committed suicide. Somehow I never thought that a day like this might come. I had blocked out that entire chapter of my life - forgotten about the half-sister that I have.

She wanted me to have the photo.

She knows about me. And she cares enough to think to send the photo.

Wow.

She looks like my father.

And there is so much I can learn from her.

She loves me as a brother. She has forgiven the situation - and is looking beyond the circumstances that surround her existence to see the only thing that a nine year old needs to know - "He is my brother, so I want him to have this photo."

I am so sorry Emma that I have not been a brother to you.

What would this world look like if we could love like that? With the innocence of a child that does not even see all the reasons that she should not think about me but only sees the thing that matters: I am a brother.

We are all called brothers and sisters in Christ. What if we could look past all the circumstances that surround our lives and see all that matters - that we are all brothers and sisters in Christ?

We'd all be getting more photos in the mail, thats for sure.
