10-20 NL at the Wynn... No longer retarded!

Playing good also means losing the minimum... After hearing more convincing evidence from my friend Travis that NL is the way to go these days, I wandered into the Wynn to play with him in a 10-20 NL game. I lost $1624, but I feel that I played pretty well. Here are the two big pots that I found myself in:

First one. UTG with $1100 limps, MP with me covered (I bought in for $3k), limps, and it's folded to me in the hijack. I make it $100 with Q Q . Both limpers call, and we see a flop of 6 7 8 . Check, check, and I bet $200. The UTG player quickly goes all-in for a total bet of $1k, MP folds, and it's up to me. Now, if the guy was deep, this is a pretty easy fold, but it was $800 to close the action. I was new on the table and had no previous reads, so went into speech mode. Basically, after much speeching, I deduced that he had some hand along the lines of 89, a pair and a draw. He had something, wanted to protect it, but wasn't terribly happy with his hand. I finally made the call. Q on the turn, T on the river. Now the hand gets fun. It's showdown. He says, "Boy, I sure hope you didn't have pocked aces, cause they're no good now!" I pause for a while, he doesn't do anything, and I say, "Show em or muck em." So, he pushes his cards forward, looks at me, and then slowly rolls over one card... nine. Then slowly rolls over the second card. Nine.

"Thanks for the speech and slowroll. That was nice." He told me it happens all the time, I told him that people aren't dicks about all the time, and the game kept going. It was really hard to keep my mouth shut throughout the session when he complained about how he never hits anything.

Second hand, toward the end of the session. I had put another 3k on the table and had about 4500 at the start of this hand. I'm in the big blind with K J . Btn limps, SB with about 10k limps, and i knuckle. Flop is J 9 7 . I bet $60 and am called in both spots. Turn J . SB checks, I bet $200, btn folds, and SB reluctantly calls. This is pretty key. He was clearly weak on the turn. Smelled very much like a draw, not a weak jack. River 6 . He checks, and I go to value town and bet $300. He quickly grabs all his big chips and flings them into the pot. One yellow (1k), one purple (500), and over a dozen blacks (100). What the?!? 6 does not complete a straight. Missed flush. He looks at me and says, "I got really lucky. You're beat." Sweet. More speech time. This time, the guy's mannerisms are all strength. But no hands make sense! He's not calling the flop or turn with 66... is he? He doesn't have J6, cause he would have felt stronger on the turn. Sure smells like a bluff! Plus it was such a huge overbet. Thank God the guy opened his mouth, because I really felt like I was beat on the river, but just couldn't figure out by what. I say, "I'll show you one if you show me one." I show him the J . He shows me the 6 . Thanks homie. I throw my cards into the muck and he shows me the other 6. So sick.

Well, I did everything I could in both spots. Lesson of the day: unless you are really good at speeches, when your opponent is facing a big bet from you, just shut up! Many of us will be able to figure out what it is you have!

Peace and good luck,

Devo
